Running safely to prevent injuries

In spite of the body succumbing to running injuries, you can reduce the risk of injury by following a proper conditioning and training program.

Running Environment

Run in the shade, whenever possible to avoid the direct glare of the sun. The best time of the day to run is early mornings or evenings. Avoid running in the afternoon and if you do apply a sunscreen lotion on the skin. Wear sunglasses to avoid the harsh glare of the sun. Wear a cap with a visor to shade your…

Prevention of Muscle Soreness

Muscle soreness is the bane of all athletes because it is connected with low muscular power outputs and an inability to carry out high quality workouts and competitions.

The exact cause of the soreness is unknown, but there are three key ways to prevent it.

(B)   Maintaining good muscle flexibility.

(C)   Periodically forcing your muscles to complete increased amounts of eccentric…

What Is Runner's Knee - Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome?

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), often called runner's knee, refers to pain under and around the knee cap. Either I'm tough or dumb or both!

Today I rode in the McGlinchy mile ride. They had a metric marathon option but I deceided on the 48 miler.  On the way there the weather was even worse than predicted, hard rain with temps around the freezing level. So esp. after hearing that the extra loop past the 48 always had headwinds? Well I went with common sense and a good thing as well. It got worse as we neared the city that had the highest elevation level (800'?) it started to sleet then it turned to snow, about two inches in mid…

DNA i can 2012 HM

I thought I could do it, so asked Dan about the guidelines, and he emailed me a training schedule for 2 weeks. I followed it except for the easy 12 K run which I ended up with 10K as I didn't measure the distance.

On the race day I made sure I'm in very near to the first row at the start line. Unlike the mumbai marathon where thousands of runners around and ahead.  So no zipping through this time.  This saved time. I was in the lot of first 15 in the beginning. Later,…

While it lasts

The only running experience I had in the past was a very brief stint of running in high school. Many years down the line, I decided to shift from my overly sedentary lifestyle and start running, which happened in Oct 2010. I began with the usual gusto that I bestow on a new venture I think I may do well in. I ran like hell. I didn't know anything about training or weekly mileage or pronation or ITBS. In the following months, I came to learn these things. The hard way. After my first…

Chilly Hilly

I did the Chilly Hilly bike ride today on Bainbride Island. Its 34 miles of as advertised hills and almost always chilly. And today was no exception 34-38F snowy rain was forecast but luckily we just got a very dry flakes no big deal.

This is the first organized ride of the year by the Cascade Bike Club and has 6,000 riders. Kind of like opening day of the boating season for mariners.

I've ridden it 5-6 times in the past and used it to gage my fitness from the winters spin…

My First Full Marathon - Auroville 2012

My first Marathon

When I read accounts of other people who had finished their first marathon I imagined that phrases like “it is battle of mind over matter”, “it’s like dying and being born again” or “I met God” were exaggerations. But having gone through my own cycle of “life-death-and rebirth” I feel reassured that it is no exaggeration. Running the full marathon is truly a triumph of mind over matter. Here is my account of what I went through.

Let me begin by…
