The Mumbai running fraternity looks forward to the Borivali National Park (BNP) Half Marathon; an event being held in this evergreen forest and organized by Ram, Kaushik, Bharatbhai, Giles and Ashok, amongst several stalwarts. Amit planned to do his 8th Marathon in 8 months along with Dr Oak, at the invitation of the organizers, and I was there to keep him company part of the way. This account is a tribute to Amit’s grit and guts.
BNP was abuzz with…

The title is an attempt at levity for this marathon, wherein a day before, I threw caution to the winds and quaffed some beers, unable to abstain from relishing the bitter-sweet after taste of the local ambrosia, the colour of sunset. The marathon expo itself was an exciting event with a percussion band in full Brazilian regalia, thumping a beat that got you to tap your…

Thanks a lot Zico for wishes, again v got stale CM. aahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
@Zico: I thought of coming to NRC tomorrow and discussing this, but will not be able to make it. So, I am asking you here.
I did 35km three weeks ago on the SCMM route (i.e. without the sea link) in 4:34. I did 37.5 k in Bangalore Ultra in Nov in 5:13:53 - I had to take several pit stops due to a stomach upset and wasted about 6-7 minutes. So, the atual running time was around 5:06.
What do you think my target time on Sunday should be? I am tempted to aim for 5:30 and use the following strategy. Use my garmin to run at the 5:30 pace - about 7.66 km/hr (1 km in 7 min, 49 sec) and see how it goes. I am confident of holding this pace for 30km. After that, I plan to listen to the body and lower pace if needed. Is this an advisable strategy? Thanks.

Hi Dan,
Yesterday I completed GRM in 2:28:45. Feeling vgood about the same.
Last week I did 30K run in 3:40 on Marve-Madh Road. I have joined Gym now and on 3 times a week I do Strength Training as advised by Heath and 3 Days of running. 2 Days on Treadmill and 1 day on Road (Marve-Madh Road). Planning to run 42 this Sunday before I taper off for a month.
Just wanted to keep you informed on the progress. Miss Aarey Run but soon I will be back .. currently sticking to program advised by Heath.
Thanks - Sharan
Hi Dan,
I went to Dr Heath Matthew on Friday. He diagnosed the problem as Insertional Tendonitis, which is caused due to inadequate Blood supply. The main cause of the problem is inadequate strength of muscles. He reiterated importance of strength training for Long Distance Runner. He advised for 3 sitting of deep tissue massages to be administered at the Kokilaben Hospital itself and then will draft a running program for me on next Saturday. So now I understand the importance of Strength training more than ever. Thanks for all the guidance.

Sharan
Hi Dan,
What MRI Scan will reveal? and can I ignore little soreness/stiffness that I got in the morning?
Regards,
Sharan
Hi Dan,
As advised, I did run on Sat and Sun for just 30mins that too in splits of 15 minutes and 5 minutes rest in between. Though there is no pain as such during the run. There was kind of discomfort to remind me of injury. Also next day morning, there is little stiffness or soreness for 2-3 seconds in the heel. I just wanted to check with you on two more points:
Uric Acid : When the problem occurred first time, I was asked do Uric Acid test and it was 6.8. Though it was within range per the report. Doctor had mentioned that it is on higher side and I should try and reduce the same following diet. Will this level have any impact on recovery?
Air condition : Will sitting long hours in Air Conditioned Office has any impact on joint pains?
Regards,
Sharan
Hi Dan,
Need your advice.
I was suffering from Achilles pain from some time. I have shown it to my cousin who is physiotherapist. She diagnosed that as tendonitis and started with the ultrasound treatment. Already done with 4 sittings since last Friday. Also doing Stretching Exercises and applying ice on the pain area. The pain has reduced substantially. There is no pain/soreness, when I get up from bed in the morning. Even during the day there is no pain. However when pressed on heel there is still little pain. I have also take Dr Heath’s appointment . But since he is going on leave and his calendar is full, earliest appointment that I got is 4th Nov. Should I take rest till 4th Nov or can I start running before that. Don’t want to take any undue risk and hence expert advice will surely help!!
Regards,
Sharan
