i-Race Results

Just saw that the i-race results are in. Happy to see so many names from ARR, BNP and RFL. 4 out of the top 10 are from ARR!! That is heartening. Congrats to all of you.@Bhaskar: Amazing that between all the work (and wine?) in Italy, you remembered to run the i-race and did so well. Congrats on finishing second. They were on the mark with the timing - pretty much what my watch showed. Great organization.See More

Running and the Brain

Here is a nice article based upon recent scientific research on the impact of running and other forms of exercise on the brain. There are some comforting findings here including:"there has not been any instance of a negative effect from voluntary running"My own experience has been that running enhances my productivity. Most of the time when I am running, I am thinking about my research or teaching and I have found this to be really helpful.…See More

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

I am not sure how many of you have seen the film or read the book "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner". Its a serious film/book about a boy from a blue collar family in England who is also a good long distance runner, and who uses it to deal with the system. There is a nice inspirational song composed by the British group Iron Maiden based upon this book/movie. It is appropriate for people like us running in the monsoon. Thought that some of you will like it.The tough of the track,With…See More

Hill training question

Our campus (where I live) is on a small hill and I have been doing hill training regularly, by running up a road. The road is slightly steeper than the one on the Marine drive flyover (used by NRC), but the distance I run is roughly the same. If I run as fast as I can, then I can do only a few (5-6) repetitions (running up the hill and walking back). If I run somewhat slowly to conserve energy, then I can do more repetitions. My question is, what is the better approach so that hill training is…See More

Profile Information

How often do you run?
A few times a week
Where do you run?
Aarey Milk Colony, Borivali National Park, Marine Drive, On a treadmill in a gym
Why do you run?
I started for fun, fitness and to be more productive at work. Now I do it for these reasons but also because it goes along with a more environment-friendly lifestyle that I am trying to adopt. What is your personal best timing? (please mention the distance and time)
42.195 km (Nykredit Copenhagen Marathon, May 2012) - 5 hrs 40 min 26 sec.
Half Marathon (Thane Half Marathon, February 2011) - 2 hrs 24 min

Sripad,

Cramps are a result of inadequate hydration and cannot be staved off by drinking Gatorade. It has to hit the blood stream and it takes time. You must ensure next time that you hydrate well with Gatorade, BEFORE the run.

Your time for 37.5K asumming you an do a 2:20 half M and factoring the heat and surface of BU, should be about 4:50

Hi Sripad,

What distance you will be running at the Ultra? I will be running the 37.5 k like last year. I plan to improve my timing this time, if everything goes as per plan. Eager to meet all the MMR & Run,Run Run  runners at Ultra.

Sripad,

With your current time you have a shot at doing a FM (in ideal conditions) in 5:05. I do not believe the THM times and so I must state that if you are able to reduce your HM time to something like 2:18, you have a better chance of going below 5 in SCMM.

You can follow Hal Higdon' Intermediate sch II and repeat weeks 8 - 15 in your run up to the bangalore Ultra. In this race you should be able to hit 37.5K in 4:23, then you know you are going to be fine with a sub 5 in SCMM.

Sripad It is called the Popliteus and you have to be careful you do not strain it. If you feel the same niggle recurring in your easy runs, revert and talk to me at NRC.
