Why Run?

Posted on January 14, 2009 at 13:00 0 Comments

A friend of ours had a question yesterday – “Why do you HAVE to run?” I’ve mentioned this before on the blog I think but the answer is that running is a calling that we can’t refuse. You simply cannot help yourself from going out running. When folks start training initially, the timing and the distance really does not matter but after a point of time, running a marathon is not a challenge until it is coupled with a time goal. To complete the distance within a certain time, also helps you add… Continue

Some Fun Workouts

Posted on January 8, 2009 at 16:23 0 Comments

Rockies – where we carried weights (rocks) to strengthen upper-body

LSD – long, slow distance (like what you do now on Sundays)

Uppers – training to run up-hills and over the crest of hills, there is indeed a strategy for that

Downers – training to run down-hills and through valleys, and again, there is a necessary strategy for that

Fartleks – which means, in Sweedish, speed-play – done during medium-length runs, picking up pace between identified… Continue

Sprints, Bottle of Wine and Track Workouts

Posted on January 7, 2009 at 14:59 0 Comments

Yesterday’s schedule was 14*200 meter sprints and I chose to go to defense colony after work to do it. The first 10 sprints were quite fast (did not record the timings really) according to my sprint standards but the last 4 were really hard. I start to cramp up on the right side of my stomach that could be because of insufficient water consumption or poor stretching before the run. The key was to tell myself that “there is no space for weakness in Sparta” – Source Movie 300 and I was able get… Continue

Auroville, e-Zone2e-Zone

Posted on December 23, 2008 at 10:39 0 Comments

My thoughts this morning was nothing but to get this run out of my way. We started the first few 400 meters at 80% capacity and did the rest of them at around 95%. The 9th 400-meter run was done close to 98% capacity and I felt quite done after it. We did a nice little walk, a few squats after the run and bitched heavily about mutual friends. The thing about runners is that we speak everything other than running while we are running and while we are having dinner/drinks, we speak about running.… Continue

Koovam, Beer in Chennai and Core Strengthening

Posted on November 25, 2008 at 15:40 0 Comments

Beer in Chennai smells like Koovam (a river that has been converted into a sewerage). When I sipped it, I really wanted to get back to Bangalore and take a quick sip of the Kingfisher here. There are several debates on this topic – some say that there is no differentiation in the taste while others (my school of thought) say that there is a clear distinction. Beer in the Mallaya land has to be better than what he gives away.

After a week’s of daze, I am finally back in business.… Continue

Arunner profiling qnaire.docppreciate if I could have your inputs on the attached qnaire, and if you could share it with the rest of your chennai runners too for their inputs whomsoever is interested to share their views.
The qnaire is self explainatory, and the covering page shares the reason for undertaking this survey with runners, of all levels.
Thanks in advance
