I have done an analysis of performance of athletes in SCMM 2010-2012 (data courtesy Timing Technologies) for half and full marathons. I have taken 3 h as cut off for half and 6 h as cut off for full marathon. I have also divided half marathon into time intervals of upto 1.30 h, 1.3 - 2 h, 2-2.3 h and 2.3-3 h. Similarly for full marathon the time intervals taken are upto 3.3 h, 3.3-4 h, 4-4.3 h, 4.3-5 h, 5-5.3 h and 5.3-6 h. I have used the chip timing and not gun timing. Hence an element of approximation is present.

You will find that the number of participants completing within the stipulated period has almost doubled in the last 3 years. It is now upto the statistically oriented to do further analysis of the data.

- For HM the number of finishers ( under 3 hours ) has moved up by about 50%
- For FM it has moved up by similar numbers.
- It would be interesting to compare this against the total number of registrants and see if this number has gone by as a %age of the numbers registered. This would mean that more folks are getting serious about their training.
- It validates the premise that since Procam has started having cut off hours runners have become more sincere.
- Another variable in these years is that in the last two years, group entries for HM and FM has been stopped. So employees of large orgns ( such as Air India ) who got allocated bulk numbers and thus had employees with BIBs who were not at all trained, has been curtailed...so finishers are more.
Great study and thanks for the sincere efforts.
Venkat
Permalink Reply by Ganesh Krishnan on January 19, 2012 at 13:47 Thanks Venkat. I found that the performance at the top level has increased tremendously. In full marathon, Apurba with a time of 3.41 was ranked 16 in 2011 while in 2012 with a timing of 3.32 he was ranked 38.
Permalink Reply by avnish upadhyay on January 19, 2012 at 14:06 The awareness is increasing day by day. It is happening in the metro's as well as in the smaller cities too. There are events happening in almost all tire-1 cities. It will only translate into bigger number in the years to come. The big events like SCMM are playing role of catalyst. I guess in couple of years we'll see 2500+ FM finishers and 10000+ HM finishers in SCMM.
The sites like the one where we are exchanging thoughts are also putting up rich and valuable content. This is bringing more seriousness among not only the aspiring runners but seasoned one too.
One more aspect responsible for time improvement are the concept of BUSES from last year. I saw Venkat steering a long HM bus on sunday. He was not only cheering his passengers but also fellow marathoners.
Running in india is having a great run. Because they say "Joy is unstoppable" !
Permalink Reply by Veera on January 19, 2012 at 14:25 Great analysis - Ganesh. Also many first time fast runners were put in "D"group , had they been in "A" it would have been different @ the top level.
My cat-rank has moved up substantially from #1221 (2010) to #137 (2011- I am still in the "open category" ).
Overall rank has gone down from #1590 to #1861 despite improving by 16 mins .
Next year , I will be running with the Vets and ranking will again go for a toss with the vets speed kings around....:-)

Permalink Reply by zico on January 19, 2012 at 16:43 Thanks Ganesh. A nice initiative. The nos are telling, in that, I was not aware that there are 12000+ runners at the HM and only 50% finish. Maybe I was biased in looking at only the FM
@ Veera - If your rank has gone down despite an improvement in time of 16 mins, it could mean either many runners that have recently run the race have run faster than you:) OR the guys have improved more than you:))....Hahaha....just kidding buddy:)
Permalink Reply by Ram on January 19, 2012 at 16:51 i have improved my timings by 36 minutes yet, my rank has gone down from 902 last year to 964 this year.
Do you think it is right time for RFL to list its shares in the bourses??
Permalink Reply by Ganesh Krishnan on January 19, 2012 at 16:58 @ Dan - The percentage of participants finishing within the stipulated period has probably remained the same over the years.
Permalink Reply by Veera on January 19, 2012 at 20:52 @Dan - LOL....:-) looks like I got to work harder ........:-) Next year SCMM will be much tougher ...racing with the Veterans ( I assume most of the veterans undergo disciplined training and come to the start line).
Btw , are we having i-race next month ?
Permalink Reply by Srivatsan M K on January 19, 2012 at 22:46 Hey Veera - Nice place to wish you for your splendid performance in the SCMM . Will we be meeting in the Bandra-NCPA run on Feb 5th?
