Its been 3 weeks since I ran, reason being a nagging pain in my knees. the pain was more while walking, I actually walked with a noticeable limp. but running was normal with little pain.
What I observed : Walking was difficult - Running Not
Climbing Down stairs was difficult - Climbing Up NOT
Squatting in toilet ( Indian Style) was painful getting back standing More painful.
It all started with the wrong kind of food, indigestion & topped it up with an attempt to do 10K.
I knew this was coming, cause I was too lazy to get up in the morning & run, as I had put up a discussion saying running just 2 days – Sat & Sundays was good.
This went on for just 2 months then it was just once a week & on Sundays I would attempt to do 10K, but in just 6 months not only my Lungs but even my feet went to their former self.
4 days ago I finally sought my Family Doc. Mr. Sameer Potdar's, advice & already feeling the advances made in the field of Medicine. the pain has reduced considerably.
He prescribed my 4 types of tablets, 2 from his clinic & 2 from the chemists.
1) Enzoflam : Paracetamol + Diclofinac Sodium & Serratiopeptidase
http://www.prescriptiondrug-info.com/topics/enzoflam-side-effect/
2) PAN 40 : Pantoprazole Sodium – Delayed release Tablet
http://www.prescriptiondrug-info.com/topics/pan-40-mg/
From the above sites I gathered that Enzoflam is a pain killer & the other PAN 40 helps
reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

Sorry to hear about this. What you have got is a painkiller + an antacid to suppress the acidity that the painkillers are known to produce.
You are being treated for the symptoms not the root cause, is what I understand.

Permalink Reply by Ric Hart on November 3, 2011 at 0:36 Michael, try a sports Doctor that other athletes have liked. Maybe they have online bios. Another thought is check out the team Docs at local colleges. Professional team Drs would probably be better but obscenely expensive. Your General practitioner is probably like the ones here and as Venkat said they only are pill pushers.
Permalink Reply by Natasha on November 3, 2011 at 9:51 I will second what Venkat and Ric say. If you have painkillers, naturally the pain will subside. But pain is something that has been created to tell us that there is a problem, and by suppressing the pain we are not going to the root cause of the problem.
Visit a sports doctor, or even a normal orthopedic doctor- a GP may not be able to get to the root of the problem.
Take care, and get well soon.

Mike: Each doctor has a different approach to theraphy. GPs generally go with pain killers and hope that the problem will solve it self and the body will cure itself. This is a passive approach.
But then you are going to run again and if there is a underlying issue then you are going to again trigger it.
You need active theraphy. You need to visit a ortho and fix the underlying cause.

Permalink Reply by Mohana Ganesh on November 3, 2011 at 13:06 As mentioned by Ganesh I had a similar problem and did not bother much for a month or so. Since there was no pain while running I used to continue to do so. Then I started getting pain on the inner side of my knee when I ran. So I stopped running for a week and I had no limp while walking. Once again I started running and pain on the inner side of my knee also started. I started taking pain killer the night before I ran which used to give me some relief. In this way I continued for a month. Then I started getting stiffness in my knee and later slight swelling. Then I decided to go to an ortho as I had planned to go for a trek after a month. He advised me to stop running for 3 weeks, avoid climbing stairs and sitting on the floor. He prescribed me a pain killer, strengthening exercises for the quads, followed by icing twice a day. I followed his advise and was feeling better. So he gave me the permission to start training gradually. Within 4 days I went for the difficult trek. After my return my knee problem started all over again. Then I went to a Physio at Nanavati Hospital. As per her advise I once again stopped running and underwent 15 sessions of Physiotherapy treatment followed with icing and strengthening exercises twice a day. For the past 1 month I am running without any problem. The days I run 10 km I get slight stiffness of my knee but no pain. All this while I was not taking any pain killer after visiting the ortho.
I also feel that you should go to an ortho as suggested by Venkat and Ric. All the best. Get well soon.

Venkat : I do know that there is a root cause which has to be dealt with in order to be free of pain.
Mohana : Do you think with only Physiotherapy the pain will go ?
All : As mentioned before this was just the first session, the Doc. has called me again on Sat. will update you.
Permalink Reply by Ric Hart on November 4, 2011 at 0:37 Michael, You're welcome. I think its fair to nicely ask your Dr if he runs or what he thinks about running. The response will tell you a lot, if its that they are interested in getting you back to doing what you want to do in life. And of course if its negative then you need to look elsewhere for the answer.
Thats why I mentioned the online biography, I want a Dr that runs, understands its importance and wants to help me continue. Mine is like us and has the same look on her face as most of us do as she talks about her running. And she even stressed the importance of moving the body during rehab to speed healing.

Permalink Reply by Michael Dsouza on November 6, 2011 at 20:58 Hi, Did my long run of 6 kms after a gap of 2 weeks today, & No pain absolutely, while on the run i was cautious not to put too much strain & stopped at will.
Yes i had been to the Doc. yesterday & he prescribed Himalaya - Rumalaya Forte, & Ranbaxy - Altraday.
I understand that the first promotes normal strength and flexibility of the joints and muscles & the later, non-steriodal antiinflammatory preparations for topical use. Used in the treatment of joint and muscular pain.

I have also taken an Xray of my left knee which i will be putting up tomorrow.
Please put up your feedback.
Mike - Injuries are the most depressing part , but yet part and parcel of runners life . And u being a very expereineced runner , u know it better what off running can do . My 2 cents : as i am still on Physiotherapy.
1. find the root cause (as suggested by Venkat sir) .
2. Find out the Probale causes why it happned ( May be Shoes, Not stretching , Not Warming up , Not strength training ) and then decide on Point 1 .
3. Take corrective action by knowing the root cause .
4. Immediate advice will be to take rest for a couple of weeks , Ice , Compress and stretch . Do Strenght training for Quads , Glutes , Calfs , Hamstrings , Achilles . Deep massage the Tendons .
5. Train slowly again . And am sure u will be back on track offcourse with ur camera (which we all love) :)- Take care
