dear vivek, the champion chip is necessary so that not only do you get your time but also so that they know that you did not cheat, it is optional because once you buy it , you wont need to do so again the next time you come to run comrades. (that is the option part) so next year you can say you dont need it.
the expo is in durban so most people pick up the bin in durban, but there are people who also stay in pmb and comrades also has an organization in pmb so some locals prefer to pick up the bag in pmb. for international however it is durban.

@ranesh, welcome to india and congratulations on the 6 comrades. that is wonderful. bangalore has an active running community and you may want to run some of the races organized by them. they may not be on the official comrades list but i can talk to the cma and get your time recognized simply because you may not have another option. the bangalore ultra is to take place shortly. you may also consider to run mumbai. do let me know what you plan, but just go ahead with your registration for comrades 2011. based on your 6 comrades, i am sure we will have no problems in getting your registration through. if there is anything else do write to me at amitsheth@yahoo.com . it is easier to reach me there.
www.thefullerlife.com is a group based in bangalore. they are a great group , arvind krishnan is a part of that group

Thanks Ranesh!
You mean that you have successfully completed comrades marathon 6 times! That's amazing!
I am bit surprised why entry form makes ChampionChip as optional when it looks to be mandatory.
Generally starting point is the place where goodies along with bib is collected. I am not sure why finish point is also given as point of collection. I guess my experience is limited to marathons where start and finish point are invariably same and that's why I took that as de-facto standard.
I registered for Comrades 2011 yesterday. I will be using Standard Chartered Marathon in Mumbai (Jan 2011) as my qualifying race.

I plan to qualify for Comrades 2011 and am looking for a Marathon in Bangalore or close to Bangalore over the next three months. Does anyone know of any? I am new here in India and not met anyone in the local running circle.

Vivek, ChampionChip is a chip that you attach to your running shoes. Yes, having ChampionChip is compulsory as its the official timing used at Comrades. You have a mat at the start line which you cross over to indicate that you started the race. Then at various locations through the race approximately 6, at key pointss such as half way etc. It is used to give you official finish time when you cross over the finish line. The times at various points are recorded live and can be viewed on the Comrades website by your supporters and also to a sms service which you may subscribe to closer to race day. The cost is about ZAR80.00 whic about Rs.480. You may purchase one when you register for Comrades on-line.

You may collect you race number and goody bag at either at the Expo in Durban or at Comrades house in Pietermaritzburg. My preference is to collect mine in Durban and that's where all the Comrades hype is. I suggest you collect your race number (register) about two or three days before as you may ge caught up with all the activities and do something foolish the day before at the Expo by trying out something new which could ruin your race.

I have completed six consecutive Comrades Marathon but missed out going to SA due to me taking up a new position in Bangalore and being able to do the neccessary mileage required to have good Comrades.

Comrade Marathon is one of the most special Ultra Marathon in the World and a Comrades Medal is held as a prized possesion by all who manage to achieve the honour of earning one.

I have few queries related to registration:
What is ChampionChip?
Do I need it? What's the advantage of taking it or disadvantage of not taking it?
Where should I mention I will collect my Comrades goodies, Durban (starting point) or Pietermaritzburg (finish point)?
