Some of the moments/sights you enjoyed during the Marathon

My best moment was at the Sea Link when I looked up, I could see all the wires and I was dumbstruck by the sheer size of the bridge. I was completely dwarfed by the whole sight and for me that was the best moment.

My best running moment was Near Ambassador hotel. Though I was struck by cramps immediately on turning left, I knew I had this first marathon in my bag. The happiness that I felt at that moment...I wonder whether I will get that feeling again.

Please share some of your best moments/sights from the Mumbai marathon, running and non-running.

The best sight was all those runners after the 30th kms mark who were chugging on knowing very well that they were wilting under the unrelenting sun and yet not giving up.

When i reached D.N. Road i espied a quite senior citizen runner who had one bent leg, wearing only a banian and an ordinary short and BARE FOOTED. He was quite focused and i gently tapped him on his shoulder and wished him good luck.

Emotional moment for me was when i reached D.N. Road near Canada building where my late father had worked all his life in a LIC branch. I felt his spirit was there to guide me.

Joyous moment was when Madhu greeted me at the finish line and when all my friends greeted me in unison at the Barista.

Many Moments ,

1.The marathon never even started .. At 4k , I stopped due to severe side stitch , this has never happened to me and was forced to walk for 15 min , then I saw a gentleman with a permanently twisted right ankle and dragging his shoe (shoe making a screeching sound  against the ground ) and eventhough he was in gr8 pain  he was running with a smile...........his spirit... this image made my day.......will never forget this moment ... and result ... forgot abt the stitch ....I started to run again........:-)

2. There was a man shouting on top of his voice at Peddar Rd climber , Run Run .....excellent (changla)..You are all great runners and each one of you is a sportsman ( was shouting this on top of his voice in Hindi and Marathi).

3. A bunch of kids , wanting to high five with me , I had to stop and high five each and everyone of them ..must have been at least 10 -12 kids.

4. Yes ,Anand the sea link ofcourse , I though what a  magnificient structure and then immdly cursed the "sun" as well which was beating down on us slow runners in full glory.

5. Two elderly ladies @ around 34 k mark ....encouraged me to run .

6. Hemant cheering for me at 40k marker. Thank you , Hemant .

7. Last but on the least , I never expect anyone at the finish line , but it was a very pleasant surprise to see the bright smile of Madhu welcoming us at the finish line.  Thanks, Madhu and I pray you recover soon.

8. Finally , Barista ka Rishta .......gr8 to have friends like you and make new friends .

Thank you guys you rock !!

With Best wishes,

Veera

Mumbaikar Support!! The support I saw from the people was fantastic. Hats off Mumbai!
Anand thanks for starting this discussion. The best moment for me was 1. The start line where i met my frnds fm our grp.2. was when i saw my Gold grp runners whom i motivated to run over taking me at charni road. 3. When fishermen and women offered me a Nariyal paani at seaface. 4. Seeing my wife run the Dream run. 5. Ashok Naidu in the medic team helped me with spray on shoulder at Mela. 6.Madhu welcoming at finish line. 7. Meeting all the stars at Barista- felt like a achiever.

It was a fantastic experience in all - my first HM. One of the best moments during the run was when we had completed around 16 KMs. There was a gentleman with salt and pepper hair running alongside. The spectators on the roadside were cheering wildly and one of them yelled to the gentleman beside me " C,mon uncle, u can do it, just 5 kms to go" - and then the gentleman blows his top and angrily yells, "don't call me uncle, idiot".  It was hilarious:)

One awesome moment was when i was turning onto the Chowpatty stretch and the FM lead runners were running full tilt on the other side.  It was indeed a jaw dropping sight seeing them sprint with such grace!

I should also add the sight of the African runners zooming past us just prior to the Sea Link. They went past so silently, that they could have competed with the best from the cat family. It was a goose-pimple moment for me

Many moments that I remember:
-When I clicked my "Timer" just 15 seconds before the 'starting mat', and passing on the 'timer mat',  it was like clicking the "on" button for the climax---the actual event !

-'No cramps/niggles' at all, at the 7 kms mark before the first hour was great. A clear signal that the body is fine and the pace is just right !
- Hitting the 10 kms mark faster than expected and without any problem
- At Haji Ali road, the hordes of Half Marathoners passing by on the other side and suddenly getting my name shouted "3 times" within 10 minutes  at intervals by several friends  from the other side of the road !
- Watching the Ethiopians/Kenyan runners gracefully glide through at INS Trata

- Seeking Ganesha's blessings at Siddhininayak !

- Running through the Shivaji Park stretch and getting cheered by the 'Mumbaikars"

- At Mahim Durgah, several small boys and a girl wanting to shake hands
- At Mahim junction, the 21 kms mark reached before the 2 hrs 55 minutes 'limit' and empty "Toilet cubicles" available without any queue . What a royal relief !! Absolute bliss in empting the bladder ( first stop after Azad maidan).

- On the Sea link and still  more than 2 hr 40 minutes before the cut-off time of 12.40 pm. Yes, I will finish in time !! Decided not to take any risks like trying to speed up, etc

- Worli sea face. 30 kms mark enjoyed eating a 'giant banana' - wonderful nutrition !

- Past Jaslok - decided to jog uphil and then downhill to gain a few minutes for ensuring a pre-12.40 p.m. finish

- Chowpatty - about an hour left to complete less than 6 kms. decided not to do anything foolish---just walk comfortably !

- Churchgate...still more than 15 minutes left ;; no problem....

- Fountain turning into final stretch...just 1 km left..yes I will make it..

- 500 mts mark..almost there

- 200 mtres... people cheering ..."get to the finish because you deserve it"...

- Last 50 metres ran with head up ( as advised by Hal Higdon) ...almost ran through half-marathon finish line....luckily saw the board almost with just 10 metes to go and ran in through the Full Marathon finish line over the finshing mat....I am still feeling fine.....clicked the 'timer' saw the 6 hours 18 minutes... as against target of 6 hours 25 minutes....felt good.....actually feeling less exhausted than when first officially completed the HM in 2005......asked for the place where "FM finishers medal" is given...

Thanks Anand for helping me relive the moments.

Rgds,

Pandurang

There were many good moments:

1.) The total energy at the start of the FM, the music was good. Also radios were blarring all thru marine drive. gave a kind of positive energy.

2.) Running on the sealink at daytime was too good, last year during the half marathon it was very dark & didn't get the feel of it.

3.) 2 of my friends had come enroute to give me encouragements & refreshments, one b4 the sealink & one at pizzeria. Boiled potatoes & redbull at around 24 km mark did wonders to my end performance.

4.) Bystanters & even police shouting encouragements at peddar road was too good. Not to mention handing out those refreshing peices of oranges.

The event was much more well managed than last year & running it was a pleasure.

The heartening thing was to see cops clap. There was one before the Sea Link who was doing it purposefully. He deserves our kudos
@Anand - Yes, even I was surprised seeing those cops (all of them sitting /some precariously perched on the divider ) clapping and cheering ...I burst into a laughter then as I am now while typing this.

Hi Veera & Anand,

I also happened to witness of one of the Police Inspectors clapping and cheering out loud to the runners......what more you could ask for when you are reaching the finish line.......This happened as I crossed churchgate station........No stopping then.

The moment that I very clearly remember  was of Bhaskar running in top stride on the opposite direction and as always smiling. This was along the Worli Seaface.
