Hi folks,

I am new to this forums and this is my first post. I have been a regular runner for years, nothing heavy but like 4.5 km/day x 4 days a week, so around 18 km per week. Although I have not participated in any long races, wonder what would be a good way to start training towards it.

And btw, I am 38 years old.

Also, where do most of you get your running shoes? I am finding it very difficult to get good running shoes. I have a pair of Adidas Response Cushion 17 right now, but what would be better? I am a neutral to very slight pronator.

Also, wonder which is a good jacket for use both in the rains and mild cold? Mild because it gets kinda cold where I live, so one has to resort to many layers if one ventures outside. I have never run on a treadmill :-) I was eying something that had removable sleeves...any suggestions?

John,
I'd say you should pick one of Hal Higdon' programmes for Beginners in Half Marathon, from the net and train accordingly. Just make sure you watch yourself for signs of overtraining.

I do not train in the cold but I can suggest that you wear a half sleeved T-Shirt and then wear a vest over it. The vest can then be taken off and tucked into a belt bag. The vest should be the Dri-Fit type of light material.

About shoes, I'd say unless you are currently getting injured, just stay with minimal cushioning shoes that are regular.
All the best

John,

my humble suggestion to you -

44 years old, ran my first half marathon in auroville this feb 14th. I went from nothing to 21K - have done 25k in training.
I am truly the epitome of Couch25K!!

I you are looking for some serious, fun training, I will highly recommend Runners High. I have signed up with them for bangalore sunfeast 10K with a hope to better my time.

BTW are you in Bangalore? that should have been my first question!!
Hope this helps!!

Hi Zico and Anuradha,

Thanks for your replies.

I looked up Hal Higdon's programs and they look pretty good to me. Hope I can implement them. For the shoes, my current pair is almost at the end of their cycle, so I decided to get some Asics Gel Kayano 15s for now; a friend is shipping it for me.

Anuradha, your achievement is truly remarkable - maybe I can reproduce that as well!

I am not located in Bangalore; things would have be so easier then. I am located in Siliguri, WB. It does not have much of a running culture, except for the Army Jawans who run like the wind :-)
John,
good choice on the shoes!! i have heard that they are the best.
good luck and perhaps when you are in bangalore next you could run with runners high!!

Welcome John. As zico mentioned there are enough training programs on the web. You just need to pick the distance for your first race and religiously follow the program.

When I was traveling in the U.S, I ran in the cold and rain at approximately 8-10 C. Rather than a jacket, gloves and a skull cap helped me more. Adidas does have some good waterproof jackets.
