Dear Friends,

I wish to run Full Marathon at Mumbai in Jan 2012 if all goes well with training.

Few details :
- I live in Bangalore. Age 40.
- ~8 half marathons in 3 years. I can finish HM strong.
- 1 hr 48 in HM at SCMM 2011, 47:00 in TCS 10K 2011
- Longest run - 25K at Bangalore Ultra 2010
- Never attempted marathon yet
- Regular in training this year since mid-March (weekly 20-22 km running, & fairly regular 1-day/wk cross training)
- I can commit to the weekend long run, 2 days training runs and 1 day cross training

I plan to participate in,
1) Kaveri Trail Marathon (18-Sep),
2) Bangalore Ultra (13-Nov) and
3) Mumbai Marathon (15-Jan?)

My questions :

Q1 : Is FM at Mumbai (Jan-12) too ambitious ?

Q2 : If FM at Mumbai is realistic, what to train for ?

1) HM at KTM and FM at Mumbai

OR

2) FM at KTM and FM at Mumbai

If I had to choose between low risk of injury and
running FM at KTM, I would choose to avoid injury
risk.

Q3 : What distance at Bangalore Ultra - 25K / 37.5K / 50K ?

Kindly suggest.

Thanks in advance,

Sanjeev

Sanjeev -

My $0.02: I think Mumbai '12 is not ambitious, but certainly realistic for you. You've run enough HMs (which is not a pre-requisite BTW) to graduate to the big one. The second question is tricky though. Depending on your current training levels, a FM at KTM may or may not be realistic. It's less than 4 months away and if you are starting your training now, I would say do the HM at KTM. You could run 37.5K at the Ultra and then run the FM at Mumbai after that. However, if you've been training well and can pick up from say week 6 of say a Hal Higdon plan from this week, you could do the full at KTM, but I'd advice you to take it easy there - KTM is not a friendly course for veteran marathoners, let alone first-timers! The upside however is top-notch organization and plenty of hydration and nutrition on course.

Happy running!

Thanks Ramesh for the tips.

My  training this year was focussed on improving 10K timing so though quality was good, I guess it is not enough weekly distance as a base for FM training.

So, I can go for HM at KTM  (strong), 37.5 km at Ultra (easy, for the experience of running a race longer than HM) and FM at Mumbai (hopefully not just for the experience but a satisfying one !?). From the few running guides I read, I find that except the distances of tempo and long runs and taper period, trainings are similar for HM and (novice) FM. So training for HM @ KTM can serve as base for the 4-month FM training for Mumbai. Does this plan sound right ?

Dear Sanjeev,

You have fantastic performance in SCMM 2011 and TCS 2011. I am pretty confident that you can do Full Marathon in Mumbai. If you have second thought in your mind, you can opt for option of early start in 2012 and once you are through, thereonwards you can run in Competetion category.

Please do not worry about age. At 40, if you are having this kind of time record, you can do better in your future races.
