hi guys,  please bear with this long post!!

i've been running just 7 months, No experience whatsoever. .

Need some help in getting me new shoes.

I weigh 86 kgs - i think that qualifies me as heavy :).

I have completely flat feet (no low arch , nothing!! - as flat as a pancake ) . though i am now used to running with the slight burn in my midfoot and my mid foot is  very wide.

I am an overpronator

I avg around 25-30 km a week currently.

I am looking for a pair of shoes preferably in india.(can aslo try something from abroad but a new pair is the need of the hour) .

I was suggested the Nike structure Triax 13, and from what i can see online ASICS evolution and kayano 16 also seem like good options.Anything that anyone can suggest

Apart from these i have noticed that i tend to run a lil weird . My left foot rotates a lil more which has over the years given me a very different physiology of the 2 legs. My left leg is a lot stronger and toned , but on my long runs , only my left glute hurts and leaves my heels very sore

also when i  am trying to push a lil harder during my interval training, my outer shins seem to pain.Any idea whats causing this?

All sorts of advice is welcome.

Hi,

I'm flat feet too (pronator either so) ... And I've running with Kayano 14 since almost 2 years without any problem ... The better shoes I ever had (and I had try some other brand : Mizuno, New Balance, Reebok, Nike etc ....).

The best ever, can run 15km without any feetpain.

For the rest, no idea, you should go to a specialized doctor I think.
I have flat and wide feet...I tried the Kayano sometime back and even the wide sizes turned out a bit too narrow for me.
Saucony Progrid worked really well for me...but because of the difficulty in finding it again, I switched to New Balance. They come with a webbed sole which is great! I have been running 50+kms per week for the past 4 yrs without any major injuries.

New Balance 850 and Newbalance 904 have worked really well for me.
where do u get the new balance in India?

Hi,

I think you may need to look at bit wide shoes. Asics 2150 perhaps? Noting that you have wide feet, I think the kayanos will be a bit too narrow (from my experience). No idea regarding Nike Structure Triax 13.

Try Ebay Global Easy Buy for shoes; sometimes they have good offers.

Shin splints..which shoes do you currently run with? Possibly a combination of your current shoes + pushing yourself too hard. Do some exercises for your leg lateral compartmental muscles. There are some nice ones on Youtube.
could u elaborate on what kinda exercises john?
Even i think it's the shoes which have quite a crucial part to play in the shin splints. Settled with Gel 1150. Widest in ASICS :)

Hi Faraaz,

I found this very helpful from this site.

Also, found walking forward on heels and backwards on toes is very good for the lower leg muscles. I also have very flat feet, though narrow. I found the Kayanos 15 very good, though they are pretty heavy.

Where did you buy your Asics from?

Regs,

John

I have flat foot and had a major problem of Shin Splint with Reebok Shoes (ignorant me... they were not even Running Shoes... just plain Sports shoes)... Then my friend asked me to consult ASICS store in US where owner told me to try ASICS Kayano 14 and showed me exercises which can be done post running... Duck walk with fore feet outward (Charlie Chaplin Style) and fore feet inward on the heels. He also suggested me to do 10-15 mins stretching post running and core muscle strengthening every alternate day... (me lazy never followed alternate day thingy... but did stretching religiously)... Now I don't have any issues of splints... In one book on Marathon trng, it was suggested that mid foot landing avoids Splint problem... you can try checkin that as well...

hey faraaz,
first thing being 86kg doesnt make you heavy person, since it depends on a whole lot of factors...like height, muscle mass, build, genetics etc....get the drift..
dont bother about shin splints for now because maybe the current shoes are worn out and/or you need some conditioning to be done,WHICH none of us take time to do until such niggles come up..time to wake up then,of course now that you have bought asics, test run them and see how they feel....be ready to accept that they may/may not work....
new balance is currently not available in india,if someone knows where pls do tell us!!
be consistent with your training plan, like run regularly, strength train often, stretch too,eat and sleep right....
Best
