The Chennai runners consists of runners of varying achievements, ranging from short distances to full marathons, to runners having completed the Ultra Marathon (greater than 42.2km)
The group was started in November 2005 by Ram Vishwanathan, Hari Shankar and Vidyut. Both Hari and Vidyut are entrepreneurs while Ram is a software engineer.
In the last couple of years since they started, the group has picked up momentum along the way, and is today one of the most active running groups in the country. They have members ranging from all age groups, with the common goal of sharing a passion for running and having fun while at it.
Runners meet up regularly at the runs held every day of the week except Monday, share their training routines, running experiences and push each other to go up that one notch. One of the best parts of being part of a group like this is the knowledge a novice runner can gain from those who have been running regularly.
The Chennai Runners have an excellent scheduled run programme in place which is ideal for both beginners and runners looking at improving their pace/ distances. The 6 scheduled runs every week are held around different areas of Chennai selected based on traffic, uphill climbs along with long runs along the ECR every alternate month.
The Sunday runs are cross training runs ending with a bout of frisbee or cycling.
The Chennai Runners also run an “Extra-Miles Program”. As part of this programme the group donates running gear in good condition to runners with potential who are unable to afford running gear. Used shoes, jerseys and running shorts in good condition are given to these runners.
Surprisingly in an age of rising costs the runs are completely free of cost. This vibrant group of runners must be the first port of call for any runner visiting Chennai.
