The Twilight Zone had mooted a Churchgate-Bandra run as part of its training schedule, a few months ago, but it was deferred thanks to the heat. The BNP21K race organised by the RRR...RMR group, and scheduled for 22nd Aug, has now given us an excuse to slot this long-deferred run into this training schedule.

 

After several consultations, discussions and considerations, the logistics of the run have more or less been frozen. As an overwhelming majority expressed preference for a reverse route, and also desiring to give the Thane Varsha Marathon a skip, the run details are now as follows:

 

Date of Run: Sunday, 18th July, 2010.

Time of assembly: 5:00 - 5:15 am. Run to begin at 5:30 am.

DIrection: Bandra to Churchgate

Starting Point: Southern end of Carter Road Promenade, Bandra, abutting Otters Club. (Although runners deciding to join en route can do so anywhere.)

Destination: NCPA, Nariman Point.

Estimated distance: 21-23K (this is a pure guestimate, but if anyone volunteers to measure and post it here, that would be priceless)

 

Route: Carter Road Promenade (Otters Club / Joggers Park end), straight down Turner Road, past Moti Mahal Restaurant, to the HP Petrol Pump (junction of 5 roads, near Bandra Talkies/Suburbia) - turn right at the pump, straight down past Bandra Talao, Lucky Restaurant, Mahim Causeway - at St. Michael's Church veer right onto Cadell Road, then straight down past Hinduja Hospital, Shivaji Park, Siddhi Vinayak Temple (do not turn left towards Sayani Road, but stay straight), going past Bengal Chemicals/New Passport Office, Century Bazar, Sasmira, Poddar Hospital, follow left road to Worli Naka (NOTE: Worli Sea Face detour and stopover now stands cancelled). Right at Worli Naka, straight down to Haji Ali (now joining the SCMM route). Towards Cadbury, Jaslok Hospital, up Kemps Corner Flyover - turn right towards Babulnath Temple - straight onward then left on to Marine Drive, the entire length of Marine Drive and finish at NCPA.

 

The plan is to start the run on time, so those who come in late, can join in at any other point along the route, as some other runners have already planned. Rain will not deter us from running, unless it's another 26/7.

 

Being a pre-sunrise start, runners are advised to wear a light coloured shirt/vest or if possible fluorescent strips, so as to be easily spotted by drivers. Wherever possible, running will happen on the extreme RHS of the road facing oncoming traffic.

 

We reiterate that this is NOT a race but a group, camaraderie run, with training for the BNP 21K race in mind. Runners therefore run at their own risk, and those who have never run at least 20K before (or at least 16K as part of their latest, ongoing training schedule), or have any medical conditions not conducive to long-distance running, are advised not to run. In any case, each runner takes responsibility for themselves.

 

The plan is to run in groups - generally a faster and slower group depending on runners' paces. The idea is to ensure that no one runs alone - especially female runners. Each running group will be requested to account for those that started out with then, noting any drop outs along the way. Please ensure no one in your group lags too far behind, run in a more cohesive group throughout. 

 

As this is just a training run, water and other supplies will NOT be arranged, and each runner is advised to carry their own water (500ml bottle is ideal) and money to replenish water stocks at shops along the way, as per their fluid requirements. Remember that hydrating along the way is absolutely essential. However, if anyone wishes to volunteer arranging these - along the route or at the destination - that would be fantastic (Sundaresan, you may want to post something in this regard).

 

Neither will there be any provision for keeping bags or any other accessories. You run in the gear you land up in, and carry anything else with you.

 

In the spirit of runner camaraderie, there is a suggestion to chill out after the run, at a Nariman Point/Churchgate cafe/restaurant. While this will be an impromptu decision, runners will go dutch - hence advised to carry monies to cover this as well. Venue recommendations are welcome.

 

Finally, being a training run with an emphasis on group/camaraderie running, the idea is not to threaten the world record, but run at 70-75% or lower of your peak capacity. Enjoy the run, and leave the Olympic trials for another day... 22nd August, maybe.

the starting point is the southern end of the carter road promenade, abutting otters club, and mere metres away from jogger's park. if you come via bandra station, take a rick going towards turner road (and NOT hill road), ie move northwards in the khar direction. in fact just tell the driver otters club or jogger's park. not sure if there are buses that early, but if you get one, again in the same direction (towards khar, stop is opp the stn), i think just one route comes to otter's... #220.

if you're driving or coming by road from the western suburbs, get onto linking road from santacruz police stn. look for landmarks on your left - reebok store, titan showroom/CEO rules, singh musicals (next to UTI ATM, if am not mistaken) - that is premnarayan indernarayan chowk. from there drive straight but not much ahead you have to turn right at the NEXT signal (can't recall the brand, but a huge men's clothing store is at the signal just on the left - louis phillipe or one of the other big brands). turn right at this signal... you are now on khar danda road (for those that did the greenathon, this is the road in reverse we did on the second day, going towards juhu)... stay absolutely straight on this road, which later will curve naturally onto carter road (DON'T turn anywhere else). soon you will see the promenade on the sea side of the road... drive straight onward to the end of the promenade, which is next to otters club - our starting point. to park, go straight ahead just some 60-70 metres (do not turn), parking available outside joggers park. alternatively ram/giles, if it is at giles' place, please post accordingly.

for those coming in from town side or via the highway (take the SV road turn on the flyover from the highway, and NOT reclamation), come to the HP petrol pump after bandra talao, just where linking road begins and sv road forks out. take a full 90 degree left at the pump. you are now on turner road. drive absolutely straight down, past crosswords, etc, till you come to where the road turns completely right (that's carter road). do not turn right , but left, where the jogger's park parking space is available.

anyone more familiar with landmarks i mentioned but wasn't too sure (UTI ATM, louis phillipe store), please update.

being slower runners it is likely that the group would be catching up with us rather than vice versa :-)

I plan to do a 8:2 Galloway Run Walk, and I run at about 10 minutes / mile and walk at about 16.5 minute / mile. So there may be a case where I run faster than the slow group, but they catch up with me in the wall segment. NOt sure wht my weighted average speed will be.

BTW, has anyone worked out the average speeds in min / mile for the faster and slower group?
If the group starts at 5.30 am at Otters Club, one can safely assume the group will reach Hinduja Hospital signal on Cadell Road at 6.00 am, so if I do turn up, I will join the group at Hinduja Hospital traffic signal on Cadell Road (near Status restaurant) at 6.00 am.
ok, here are the confirmed landmarks when coming from the western suburbs... if you get onto linking road from santacruz police stn, you will cross the following - all on your left as you drive... HDFC bank, kotak mahindra bank, benetton showroom, icici bank, nike showroom, reebok showroom, titan/raymonds/CEO rules, after which you have to turn at the next signal. at this signal junction, louis phillipe showroom is on your left, citibank is just ahead also on the left, while diagonally across is kiah diamond jewellry showroom and belmonte. you have to turn right into this road which is khar danda road. rest of directions as described earlier.

on the run, i reckon, st. michael's mahim is about 3.5 to 4 K, so assuming a slow start of 7 min/K that would make it about 25-30 minutes to that point. after that, it's pure guesswork. poddar hosp would be around the halfway point so 11-12 K, which would mean around 70-80 mins from start. pure guestimate.

the entire route is around 21-23K , so the first runners should be reaching NCPA around 2 hr 10 to 2 hr 25, unless someone is actually going for PB, or if krish is running or if bhasker desai is pursued by the gestapo.

@Milton, i think we need to give some approx time to the intermediate joiners, by which time they should remain present at the spot. Could be on the basis of timings of the fast runners in the group.
ram, the intermediate timings i have tried to address in my last post. beyond a point it's all guesswork. as mentioned, i estimate 3.5-4K from carter road to st michaels, which should make it 25-30 mins @ 7K/min pace, which means around 5.55-6.00 am. if poddar is nearabout halfway, that should be 11-12K so estimating 70-80 mins we should get there around 6.40-6.50 am. pure guesswork.

the intention is not to target PBs, so i'm guessing the first runners should be running at slower than 6 pace, and starting off slower still, to conserve energy.

i think the solution really lies in at least one person from each group (starting location) running with a mobile. that way we can have real time and accurate co-ordination. one of your online forms, requesting name, cell # and starting point for those carrying a cell would be useful. alternatively, everyone confirming could fill in that form and we throw in a column requesting latest timing over whatever distance. that way we can even resolve the groups beforehand.
