It's the first Sunday of the month again, how time flies! The 14th edition hits the road as per the details mentioned below
Date: Sunday 4th September, 2011.
Time: Assembly: 5:15 am.
Start: 5:30 am Bandra starting point: Southern end of Carter Road Promenade, next to Otter's Club.
Destination: NCPA, Nariman Point.
Estimated distance: 19.5 K
Route in brief: Carter Road, Turner Road, Right at HP Pump, Bandra Talao, Mahim Causeway, at St. Michael's Church veer right on to Cadell Road, Hinduja Hospital, Shivaji Park, Siddhi Vinayak Temple, Bengal Chemicals, Century, Poddar Hospital, Right at Worli Naka, Straight down to Haji Ali (joins Mumbai Marathon route from here), Left at Cadbury House, Up Kemps Corner Flyover, Turn right and past Babulnath Temple, Left on to Marine Drive, end at NCPA.
Of course, runners can choose their own starting points, or join en route. For those starting at Carter Road, drinking water and toilet facilities available at Jogger's Park near the starting point, at a nominal entry fee of Rs. 2-. Park opens at 5 am. Free parking available in the space outside the park. No baggage holding facilities. You run with whatever you land up in. However, of late, runners have been getting their cars. Please check the developing thread to see if you can, after all, carry along a change of clothes.
Runners may also choose to load further mileage by looping Carter Road (single loop = 2.3K approx), looping Shivaji Park (approx 1.3K), detouring via Worli Sea face after Century (approx 1-1.5K added); or retrace back from NCPA towards Bandra or part thereof. The rest traditionally wait till all runners come in and then remove to Stadium Restaurant (Churchgate Stn) for breakfast.
Remember, it's only a training run with a focus on camaraderie and endurance. It is NOT a race. Over several editions now, Mani and Mumtaz have very thoughtfully arranged water and bananas, both en route and at the destination. To cover these expenses, a nominal amount is collected at the start/end of the run (Mani will inform us about the amount). However, as a precaution, you are advised to carry your own water bottle/sports drink and monies to replenish stocks along the way, in case you miss the water station, which should be positioned near Mela Restaurant, Worli or at Worli Naka.
As always, join the run only if you're in regular training and have done the distance before. In any case, all runners run at their own risk and take responsibility for themselves.
There is an additional suggestion to combine this with the suggested 'Run for Anna. Run against corruption' run. The plan is to keep it simple but symbolic. Those that wish to make a statement may run the route in a Gandhi topi with a suitable message scrawled on it. Of course, those that do not wish to be a part of the movement against corruption, can still run the course like they normally do. Suggestions in this regard are welcome.

Permalink Reply by Ram on September 4, 2011 at 16:59 About 30 runners turned up today as against 43 that had confirmed both on RFL and FB. It was a very windy run today throughout the run and at some places the winds were very strong. I don’t remember such a windy run ever on this route, despite the route almost skirting along the coast. The humidity was not such a factor today because the winds were drying you up but at the same time forcing you to work harder. As usual we started in batches with the slower runners moving up ahead before the faster ones. Varun Joshi & Kavin were planning a 30kms run today in preparation for the Vasai-Virar marathon on 18th September and they along with Ronak did an extra loop of the Carter Road before joining us. Few runners started from Khar road – Kaushik, Unmesh, Dhanraj, Santosh, Sanjay etc.
This run was falling in the middle of Ganesha festival – so we expected to see many Ganesh pandals along the way – the one opposite Bandra talab had so many trophies kept there, probably won by them as prizes in the best pandal competition, but everywhere we could see only the ad hoardings, not the idols themselves. Only at one place i.e. opposite Shivaji Park could we see the pretty looking Ganesha smiling at us from inside.
Giles Drego was going slow to ensure that all the runners from behind were taken care of in terms of knowing the route etc. Only when he was sure that they were all okay and knew the route that he sped ahead somewhere around Worli. We went through the Annie Beasant road instead of taking the Worli sea face road because of the huge winds. Stopped for taking a water refill at Haji Ali juice centre. By then the flow of runners from the opposite had already started – saw Sameer coming that way.
Mani and myself had thought of taking the diversion i.e. the hill after the Kemps Corner flyover and come out of Malabar Hill, but he went ahead as he was to do only 15 kms and so that project awaits another day. At Marine Drive, it rained heavily for precisely 2 minutes, after which the winds increased its intensity as if angry at the rain gods’ intrusion at what was its day today morning. We could see lot of muck thrown up at the Marine Drive promenade from the sea – there could have been high winds at the bay, perhaps a couple of days earlier.
The Mumbai marathon training season is fully with us as many runners did 20+ runs today – Ashok, Sameer, Manoj, Varun, Kavin, Ronak etc.
Thanks to everybody for coming today and welcome to the newcomers today – Sanjay Padmanabhan, Shyam, Kshitij Sharma, Sebastian Schuller (whom we will be sorry to miss as he is leaving for Germany in a couple of weeks).
Next run on Sunday, 2nd October 2011.
I was out so took time to post the photos. I have great time on the run and I would say it was MON like GOR but at end we had girls to give us RED BULL for free :).
Thanks Varun to pick me up from my home at 3:40 am and Bijay to drop us till Sion and in giving us ride in return.
I always admire giles who make sure that everyone in the group is fine and he make sure that any new comer do not feel alone and he gives the company :).
Thank Mani for water and Banana
