With a social cause as it's central theme, twin town's of Vasai-Virar are all set to host their first ever marathon event on 18 September. "The Save the Girl Child and Maintain Nature’s Balance” is the important message the 1st Vasai-Virar Mayor’s Marathon hopes to spreads far and wide among the villages of Vasai-Virar Taluka.
The event will be flagged off from Viva College in Virar on September 18 and travel through Nallasopara and Vasai before finishing in Varar
There will also be separate prizes for the top finishers from Vasai-Virar Taluka.
Besides the Full Marathon and the Half Marathon, races will be held for men under-20 (11kms); boys under-17 (7 kms); girls under-17 (5 kms); boys under-14 (5 kms); girls under-14 (3 kms); men & women above the age of 50 (3 kms) and a Wheelchair event (1 km).
Besides these races there will be a Fun Run of 3 km, targeting people from all strata of life. Elaborating on the arrangements to be put in place for the 1st Vasai-Virar Mayor’s Marathon, Rajiv Patil said that the participants would be provided a traffic-free route, with adequate water stations along the route. Medical stations and fully equipped ambulances, staffed with well-trained medical personnel would also be present to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
Free shuttle bus service to and from Virar station to the start/finish point will be provided on race day to facilitate participants to reach the venue without undue hassle.
The 1st Vasai-Virar Mayor’s Marathon has got the sanction of the Maharashtra Amateur Athletics Association and officials from all over the state will be deployed to oversee the technical conduct of the event.
The event will also enjoy the complete support of the Thane Rural Police to ensure the safe and successful conduct of the event. Besides the technical officials, there will be around 100 pilot bikes and around 1000 volunteers on Race Day to assist in its smooth conduct.
Registrations for all the events have begun from August 1, 2011 with forms available at different locations in Vasai-Virar. Forms are also being sent to all the District Athletic Associations in the state as well as to sporting clubs and associations in Mumbai to invite participation for the different race categories.
Young athletes will also be invited from the Adivasi pockets of Wada, Mokhada, Jawhar, Palghar, Dahanu, Talasiri, Shahapur and other rural pockets. Travel, accommodation and food will be provided to these participants.
